Not only did the earlies Chappels acquire their land as a bonus for paying slave passages, but they continued to owns slaves. However, as the quakers strengthened their position against the practice, some Chappels gave their slaves freedom - see stories at http://www.virginians.com/redirect.htm?topics&7128. I remember reading about one of my Chappel ancestors who upon his wife's death, wanted to marry a young slave.....they "left town." The mixed race communities you reference are probably Melungeons - see http://brendanichols.tripod.com/melungeon.html for the interesting history. My parent's generation of Chappels was seemingly all-white, but our children's generation now carries the blood of Cherokee, Nez Perce, Yupik, Javanese, Sudanese, and Hadramount (Yemen)- now we're "global Melungeons."
