Hi, I saw your post and wanted to add in some observations I've made as I’ve been looking at Obadiah again. Looking at the deed book entry shows a connection between John Fitzgerald and Obadiah Chaney via the "Polly" sale. Looking at the actual page from the 1782 Pittsylvania Co. Census page 42 shows an entry for John Fitzgerald. The entry after next is for Ezekiel Chaney (Son of Jacob Chaney). Directly below that is Joshua Dodson. On the same page same column Jacob Chaney is followed by David Dodson, and Rawley Dodson. Ezekiel Chaney married Letty Dodson. Since this census was done in 1700's I would assume if their names are close together and not in alphabetical order they were neighbors or lived in proximity to each other? Examining the deeds from that timeframe shows that Fitzgerald's, Chaney's, and Dodson's all took part in and/or witnessed transactions for each other, thus the connection. What specific connection to Obadiah Chaney is still unproven as you mentioned other than he is listed as the witness to the John Fitzgerald sale. I have a couple guesses but don’t have any actual proof. I’ve been browsing the genealogy boards on and off now for a few years. There has to be researchers that know much more than me I’m not sure where they are? ;> The ideas I thought of are: 1) Grandson of Jacob Chaney? Jacob Chaney’s will from 1801 lists his children most or all of which have their siblings accounted for. Two of his children were deceased at the time of the will. They were Charles and Isaiah. The statement for Charles says “Charles and his heirs” while the statement for Isaiah says only Isaiah. Did Charles have any siblings? Where did they go after he died? 2) A couple of genealogy websites list (either correctly or incorrectly) that Obadiah Chaney is the son of a Richard Chaney from Anne Arundel County, MD? I haven’t seen any cites of where this comes from. I’ve emailed a few of the site owners but have never received any emails in return. Some other websites list the son of a Charles Chaney jr as Jacob Chaney identified in 1767 Pittsylvania Co. Census. This is where it gets confusing since there’s so many Charles, Richards and other similar names. On one record it shows that there’s a Richard the Younger Jr that had an Obadiah Chaney or Cheney as a son. This Richard is related (I think) to the Charles Chaney father of Jacob Chaney. This would make Obadiah possibly a cousin or nephew somewhat removed to Jacob? Another website shows Jacob Chaney’s father Charles as being from Middlesex, VA contradicting all of the above ;> Is there anyone else researching Obadiah and or know extensively about the Jacob Chaney line that could shed some light?
