Parents of William (Henegar) Chaney--East TN

I’ve been searching for a family connection between my Chaney and Brooks families of East Tennessee for years--there is a possibility that the “brick wall” that many of us encountered trying to locate the parents of William Chaney of Grainger County, Tennessee, is cracked. Does anyone know if William’s middle name “Henegar”—(shown on this forum)—is a certainty? Where does the information on William’s middle name originate?

John Chaney—the son of William (Henegar?) Chaney who was named in William’s will of 1846, Grainger County—was in Sullivan County, Tennessee, in 1860 surrounded by Hodge neighbors. During the time, there were several John Chaneys—this John Chaney was a blacksmith and married Mary Fulman. He and Mary Chaney were living beside James Brooks in Grainger County in 1850. Attempts to isolate my Brooks from my Chaneys usually fail. Mary Fulman Chaney returned to Grainger County (from Sullivan County) and was living with Mary Jane Brooks (Perkey in 1870—my gggrand) in Grainger County (1870 Federal Census).

Mary Fulman Chaney (1804-1894) is buried in Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery in Morristown beside infant William Chaney, Hannah Chaney Helton (1822-1900)—wife of Alex, and Alex Helton (1815-1904). If anyone is following these folks, please email me so we can share information.

The focus shifted from Grainger County to Sullivan County, Tennessee. The first land deeds in Sullivan County were issued by the State of Virginia, so I began searching Virginia records for Chaney and Brooks families. Pittsylvania and Charlotte County, Virginia, surnames were often mirrored in East Tennessee, so digging a little deeper was in order. Pittsylvania, Virginia, borders North Carolina.

Some of the Charlotte County, Virginia, order books are posted online at www.vagenweb.org/charlotte/indexcha.htm (scroll down to order books) and are proving to be helpful in tracking the Chaney family that may be ours. Bear in mind that a previous Brooks researcher identified a William Brooks who married Nancy as the father of Charles Brooks --my line--of Grainger County, but the researcher provided no documentation and attempts to reach the researcher failed. William Brooks and Nancy/Ann turned up in Charlotte County order books. Nancy was a Chaney!
The following forum message provides a snapshot of part of the Jacob Chaney and Sarah Midkiff family.

Can anyone use this info?
I found this in the VA Archives on a microfilm copy of the Index to Minutes - 1765-1827 of Charlotte County, VA records.
At the October Court proceeding of 1811 a group of people who were 'brothers and sisters of whole blood of Mxxxx Chaney' were asking permission to sell the land they had inherited. (At first glance, I thought that Mxxxx was Mary, but I later decided it is Moses. Take your pick, the writing wasn't easy to read and the quality of the microfilm was not the best.)
The group included these:
Thomas CHANEY,
Elizabeth (and Reuben Cronther),
Catherine (and Willima Crenshaw),
Nancy (and William Brooks),
Penelope (and Benjamin Bilbro),
William CHANEY,
James CHANEY,
Philip CHANEY,
Susannah CHANEY, and
Reuben CHANEY.
(I believe these are all children (with the husbands of the married daughters) of Jacob CHANEY and Sarah (?Midkiff) who were found in the Pittsylvania County, VA records during the late 1700's and early 1800's.)
Hope this helps someone. So far, I can't connect this CHANEY family with the ones I have in the "CHANEY Family Register" (being the listing of the descendants of James Chaney and Mary Johnson Young Chaney), published 1991. Carolyn Cloud Stanley

Notice that Nancy Chaney married William Brooks.

Turning the search back to Grainger County, I found Isaiah Midkiff and Jeremiah Midkiff on the 1810 Grainger County, Tennessee, Federal Census abstracted by Pat Spurlock Elder. In addition, Kimble E. Midkiff and Isaish Midkiff are on the 1830 Grainger County Tax List returned by Joseph Rich, Esq. These Midkiffs track back to Pittsylvania County, Virginia. It is reasonable to assume that additional research along these lines may answer many of our East Tennessee questions. Has anyone extensively researched and followed Jacob Chaney and Sarah Midkiff?
