Ancestors of Matilda Chandler

Generation No. 1

       1. Matilda Chandler1,2, born March 24, 1794 in Vermont, died March 15, 1881 in Staunton, Macoupin County, Illinois5. She was the daughter of 2. Joseph Chandler and 3. Patience Mary Andrews Andrus. She married (1) Timothy M. Gates II April 27, 1813 in Chandlersville, Muskingum County, Ohio. He was born October 24, 1785 in Bridgton, Cumberland, Maine, and died Bef. 1860 in Staunton, Macoupin County, Illinois6. He was the son of Timothy Gates I and Susanna Marsters.

Note:
The proof of our Matilda being the daughter of Joseph Chandler is her age, her death certificate shows she was 86 years 11 months and 16 days old when she died. If you subtract her birth date from her death date, our Mary was 86 years 11 months and 16 days old when she died. Also the article in the New England Historical & Genealogical Register on Page: 122:11, lists Matilda as daughter of Joseph and Patience Mary (Andrews) Chandler.

1880 Census shows Matilda (age 86) living with her son, Timothy Gates and his wife in Staunton, Illinois. On her Death record it shows she died of a Remittant Fever, she was treated for a week before her death.

Generation No. 3

       4. Benjamin Covy Chandler, born May 16, 1727 in Pembroke, Plymouth, Massachusetts; died August 16, 1777 in Bennington, Vermont. He was the son of 8. Joseph MacKinley Chandler and 9. Elizabeth Delano. He married 5. Elizabeth Jeffreys October 03, 1752 in Cornwall, Connecticut.

Notes:
Benjamin was a worker in iron and a blacksmith. He was an early settler of Tinmouth, Vermont, moving there from Cornwall shortly after his youngest child was born, probably late in 1774. A school was taught in his home in Cornwall in 1761. He was not enrolled in any military unit in the Revolutionary War, but, of his own volition, took his gun and accompanied his sons Joseph and John to Bennington where he met his death. DAR records which indicate that Benjamin was only person killed in Battle are in error; more were killed. Visited Battle Monument and Battle site in October 1999; photos on file.

An inventory of his estate was taken 23 Feb 1778. On 28 Feb 1794 Thomas Porter, Nero Cramton and Elisha Hamilton "were appointed a Committee to devide real estate of Benjamin Chandler late of Tinmouth deceased" by Elisha Clarke, Probate Judge.

From "Myles Standish of the Mayflower", compiled by Russell L. Warner, General Society of Mayflower Descendants, 1990, p 77: The list of children of Benjamin and Elizabeth, all born in Cornwall, Connecticut are Joseph, 1753; Sarah, 1755; John, 1757, Huldah, 1759, Benjamin, 1761 (died at age 10); ELIZABETH, 12 February 1763; Jesse, 1764; Prudence, 1766; Seth, 1768; ANNA, 1769 (died at one month); ANNE, 22 August, 1770;, Benjamin (2), 1772 and Asaph, 1774.

From "Genealogies of Connecticut Families, From The New England Historical and Genealogical Register", Volume I, Clearfield Press, (Ohio History Library)

Listed in the book "Mayflower Families Through Five Generations, Volume 14, Myles Standish".

pp 301 provides information regarding Benjamin and Elizabeth Jeffrey Chandler and their family. Copy of relevant pages on file. Much of the information regarding the Chandler line through their grandchildren is taken from this source.

Benjamin was killed at the Battle of Bennington on 16 Aug 1777. (One account says he was shot by a Tory neighbor). He was not enrolled in any military unit in the Revolutionary War, but of his own volition took his gun and accompanied his sons Joseph and John to Bennington, where he died.

Makes you wonder why a 50 year old man with 11 children was fighting at the Battle of Bennington and leaving a widow. Most of these folks went to Ohio. DAR has him on file.

I read somewhere that Benjamin went out to help his sons on the battlefield and he was killed then the sons killed the person or persons who shot their father. So it would appear Benjamin was more of a concerned parent then a soldier.

Benjamin Chandler was born on 16 May 1727 in Pembroke, Plymouth, Massachusetts. He died on 16 Aug 1777 in Bennington, Vermont. Only one from Tinmouth to die in the battle, a volunteer at Battle of Bennington, VT .

This Benjamin is the son of Joseph (Benjamin, Edmund) and his first wife, Elizabeth Delano, who is a Myles Standish descendant, so he is "on the boat" so to speak and well documented by the Mayflowers.
