RE: Amelia Chandler of Duxbury, wife of William Drew Washburn (m. Duxbury, May 1818) (William Drew Washburn, Jenny Drew, Dorothy Bartlett, Dorothy Wadsworth, Mercy Wiswall, Priscilla Pabodie, Elizabeth Alden, John Alden) I have, as I'm sure many others have, been trying to figure out who Amelia Chandler's parents were for years. After coming across a record in the Kingston Vital Records that recorded the marriage of one of my great-great-grandmothers in her "nickname" (Polly) rather than her given name "Mary," I thought perhaps something similar could have happened to Amelia, for whom there is no birth record in Plymouth County (that I have found). Assuming that Amelia was probably between the ages of 17 and 20 when she married, her birth year would have about 1800 give or take a few years. When I came across a birth record for an Emily Chandler in the Duxbury Vital records, born 20 February 1799 (daughter of Asa), I remembered what I had thought was an old clerical error. On the birth certificate (obtained from the Kingston Town Clerk's Office)of Amelia's son, Martin Parris Washburn, her name is listed as Emily. If Amelia's given name at birth was Emily and Amelia was what she was called, this could explain both why there is no birth record for Amelia Chandler and why there is no further record of Emily Chandler after her birth. This is all complete supposition on my part, but I'd be very interested to know what someone else thinks? I've never heard of an Emily called Amelia, but then I'd never hear of a Mary called Polly either. Notify Administrator about this message?
