I did not thank you, James, for your response, but do so now. For many years I have tried to identify the parents of my ancestor, Rebecca Chance, born October 18, 1797. She married Aquilla Attix whose family was of Duck Creek Hundred, Kent County, Delaware, the area of John Chance.
The will of John Chance (husband of Mary) was probated March 1, 1728/9, in Kent County, Delaware. Executors were his son Alexander and his "bother William". Besides Alexander, he mentions sons Joseph and John; and daughters Elizabeth Hosier and Honor Chance, and "my 2 youngest girls to go to my mother". This son John is the "John Chance Jr." who received the grant from William Penn in 1738 and named it "Double Chance" with his father owning adjacent land. It is probably the father who bought "of John Richardson, 40 acres on north side of Little Creek part of a larger tract called 'Simpson's Choice' " in September, 1691.
That executor "brother William" Chance married Mary Griffin and later moved from Cedar Creek area of Delaware to West Creek, Cumberland County, New Jersey, about 1782, thus placing Chance family in the area of New Jersey where the families of DeMott and Slaight resided at the time. This could be the basis for the Chance/Attix/DeMott/Slaight relationships in Seneca County, New York, in Rebecca Chance's generation. Rebecca and Aquilla Attix used Chance, DeMott and Slaight for middle names of their sons. Another son was Thomas FRANKLIN Attix.
Do you have any ideas on Rebecca's parents? Do you know of a CHANCE/SLAIGHT marriage?
