Hello Becky,

Some how when I read your post, I figured you were a little new to family research, and I am no guru myself, but have found a few ways to gather some names.

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp

Go to this Mormon website, enter your names to look for, change the drop menu for Country and click United States (if in fact you are searching for someone in the US). From the drop menu for States..choose the state you think will work...try other states.

Be VERY careful of genealogy found here at the LDS...so much is sent to them by well intentioned, but badly misinformed persons...always look at what you find at the Mormon LDS as CLUES!!

Be careful to never bypass a surname just because it is not spelled like you think it should...you would be amazed at some of the spellings I have found for Chancey!! Almost all names were written by the way it sounded back then..this is called soundex...you may find Chance as Chanse, Channce, Chaunce etc. etc.

Early hand writting that had a double 's'i.e., 'ss') one "s" will look like an f... I have seen both s's in a word written with ff. An example would be dissect...can be found written diffect/difsect, - be careful..

Now, I looked a little further for your folks last night...some nights I just can't sleep, and surfing the net for family clues helps..

Here is what I found at Ancestry.com from the 1850, 1860 and 1900 census...they missed the 1870 census someway.

1850 Crawford County GA.
Jos Chance age 63 b. NC (1840 Crawford County census says Joseph)
Sarah Chance age 61 b. NC
J. M. Chance age 18 b. Ga.
J. M. Chance age 16 b. GA.
(One son might be James or Joseph and the other John...I hate census takers that just took initials... one or the other is the future father of Wm. J. Chance).

Another search type that I like is to go to http://www.google.com/ type the name you are looking for like this "John Doe" or, just John Doe (does not have to be upper or lower case). then hit Google Search.

You may get many many hits, and none of them will be what you want..but, I have hit the jackpot that way a couple of times..

If I can assist any more, let me know..

Robert
