From the Wise County Messenger published in Decatur, Wise County, Texas:
December 5, 1885
Our neighbor, JOS. C. CHANCE, returned from Sherman yesterday where he had been in attendance on the trial of his brother NEWTON charged with murder in 1863. He was acquitted. STILWELL RUSSELL defended him.
