Dear Georgia,

These Chances are a bit confusing and you've almost got them right...here's the way I think it works:

John Chaunce and Anne Christopher, of Shepley, Bromsgrove, England....are where you begin your query... my source and notes: "J. F. Chance, in his 1892 book on the Chances of Bromsgrove, gives the generations of the Chances. He lists a family chart on pg. 74 that identifies the connection between Wm. and Anne Butler Chance to son, John Chaunce of Shepley, bur. 3 Jan. 1669-70, who m. Anne Christopher. This John Chaunce's line is continued with the chart on pg. 76 to his son, William (I, the Emigrant) who m. Eliz. Perkes." Hilda, on pg. 7 of her book, identifies this as her source. He died Jan. 3, 1668/69 in Shepley, Bromsgrove, England. She was buried Jan.17, 1669/70 in Bromsgrove.

The son of John and Anne Christopher Chance was William (the Emigrant)Chance I, who m. Eliz. Perkes. They were both born in England, he in Shepley, Bromsgrove, England. Sources give this information:
"William and Elizabeth Perkes Chance, are identified in J. F. Chance's CHANCES OF BROMSGROVE AND BIRMINGHAM, WARWICKSHIRE, and also in BURKE'S LANDED GENTRY, published in England, disposed of their English property in Belbroughton, England in 1665. Sir Jeremy Chance's Generations Chart identifies this couple as having "sold property, 1665, in Belbroughton,England, moved to US in 1668 to Somerset Co., Md." I believe that I have found wills filed in both Maryland and England for this William...
which leads me to believe that he still owned property in both countries at the time of his death.

J. F. Chance also surmises on pg. 29 of his book that this same couple was alive and well in 1706 when they were disposing of property in Belbroughton with John Perkes, Sr. and John Perkes, Jr. and Wheeler Perkes. If this is so, then the death date given for this William of 1685 would have to be changed to "aft. 1706".

Hilda Chance writes, pg. 12: William and Elizabeth Chance emigrated from England to Somerset Co., Md. in 1668."... and... " William reared a large family on the banks of the Choptank River in Maryland", and continues with " came to America with Lord Baltimore in the year of 1668". (her source: La. State Univ. and A&M College, Baton Rouge, La.)

Note: I'm curious... can you share where you found the specific death date in 1685?

William I and Eliz. Perkes Chance were the parents of siblings Richard Chance (the Senior) and William II(the Merchant) Chance. There is a 20 year gap in their birthyears, suggesting there may have been other unknown siblings born to this couple. These two brothers are the patriarchs of most of the Chances lines which spread across the US.

William II (the Merchant), b.1660, actually lived out his life in Bromsgrove, England... as partner in Chance and Homer, listed in 1777 in the Birmingham Directory, which is where the firm was located. I surmise that as a merchant, he probably had interests in America, if, indeed, he did not actually come over on occasion to visit his son, William III(the Yeoman) who also settled in America.

Tombstone inscription at Bromsgrove churchyard identifies this individual with this family. (source: J. F. Chance, 1892 book on the Chances of Bromsgrove.) He was m. to Frances Taylor (1659-1742)

William I(the Emigrant), died in Maryland in 1685. His son, William II, the merchant, b. about 1659 in England, remained in England. Since William II was born 1659, about 9-10 years BEFORE his parents are reported to have migrated to America, it is probable that the first EMIGRANT of this line was William I, the Emigrant, who came, settled and died in Maryland.

William II's brother, Richard, (Sr.) (b. Sept. 1680) was married to Eleanor Pearson (June 10, 1704) in St. Peter's Parish, Talbot Co., Md. He died 1747 in Queen Anne Co., Md., will filed in Bk. 25, pg. 255.

Hope this helps!
Earlayne
