Susan,
I am typing you again because I spoke to my Mother who lives in Myrtle Beach. Though her and my father had a bitter divorce in 1976 she was willing to give me some info.
She said once when I was little my Grandmother Champion told her that the Champion family fled France and moved to England due to some undisclosed family indiscretion. Our last name was changed at that time. She can't remember, but she believes it was either Championne or Champlaine. Since that had to be a couple of 100 years ago that may be the reason for the English confusion.
My real father John R. Champion who lives in Florida where I live also eluded to that same fact a while back, but I dismissed it due to his many years of drinking which my Champion side of the family is known for.
I do know that when they migrated they came through the Port of New Orleans.
