Hi Elaine -
It was nice to hear from you.My Generation No. 1 starts with James Champion (my gggg grandfather) who was born between 1742-1750 in probably Berkeley County, Virginia (Now West Virginia) and died in April, 1817, age 67+or- in Beaver County, Pa.He was married to Elizabeth born about 1746.I do not know what Elizabeth's maiden name was.
As far as William Champion (my ggg grandfather) is concerned, he was a son of James and Elizabeth and was born about 1791 probably in Beaver County, PA.He died around 1830-1831 in Crawford County, Ohio. His wife, Nancy Kelly was born about 1794 in Bedford County, PA.They were married in Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of George Kelly. She died after 1860 of Seneca County, Ohio. After William died Nancy married Jacob Bunce.
My gg grandfather was George Champion born about 1818 in PA and was the son of William and Nancy (Kelly) Champion.George died after 1880 in Flatrock Township, Henry County, OH.He was married to Sarah Ann Beshures on January 8, 1844 in Crawford County, Ohio.
My g grandfather, Benjamin F. Champion, son of George Champion was born in 1850 and died 1888.He married Helen J. Karsner on March 15, 1874 in Henry County, Ohio. Helen was born in 1856 and died in 1935.After Benjamin died, Helen married William Brubaker.Benjamin and Helen are buried side by side in Cole Cemetery, Florida, OH.
My grandfather, Herman Ray Champion, son of Benjamin F. Champion was one of two children born to Benjamin and Helen Champion.Herman was born May 8, 1878 and died February 11, 1946 in my parents house in Toledo, OH.He married Pearl Edna Weaver in 1902.Pearl was born on January 20, 1883 and died July 16, 1966.Herman and Pearl are also buried in Cole Cemetery in Florida, OH.Herman's only sibling was his sister Sade C. Champion, born September 30, 1876 and died September 30, 1938.She married Lewis F. Hammon.
A note that I received from distant couisins state that in 1801 James, William, John and Joseph Champion appear in the tax lists for New Sewickley Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania.Another distant cousin said she was able to find a will for James Champion in Sewickley, Beaver County, Pennsylvania and one for Sarah Champion, Hopewell, Beaver County, Pennsylvania. She was also going to try to visit Conley and Hanna Cemeteries to take photos and possibly get copies (if available) out of Beaver County.
My father was Glen Carroll Champion, born March 1, 1913 and died November 3, 1976.He married Mildred Irene Stout in November 8, 1937 in Bowling Green, Ohio. They lived their entire married life in Toledo, Ohio and had three boys and one girl (ME)!
I would love to receive a copy of the picture of William J. Champion and if you could e-mail me at [email protected], I would really appreciate it.I have a lot more information on all of the children of each generation along with what was supplied to me by the two distant cousins I talked about earlier.
The original homeland of our Champion ancestors was in Normandy, France. They were Protestant and left France some time around 1550-1600 to seek a place with more religious freedom. They went first to England, Holland, Northern Ireland and Scotland, then when the colonization of America started, they were among the first to make the move.
Sorry if I got too lengthy. Will look forward to the picture.
