Thoughts on Champion's of York, SC

I've been trying to find a link between the William Champion of Granville NC, York SC (d 1818 York SC) with the Champion's from Isle of Wight, VA. Most all of the genealogies I have studied have tried to place this William as the son of one of the lines that sprang from Edward Champion, Sr. I have tried to do this also, but since I could really find no definitive proof, I decided to start from scratch and totally ignore works like Boddie, and see what I could find.

I have several theories that are different from the Isle of Wight theory. Starting with the most farfetched:

It appears to me that my ancestor and his family just appeared out of nowhere in York S.C. with no proof that they came from VA at all. So I thought that they may have migrated directly there from England. Along the same lines as Richard Champion (merchant and porcelin maker), who came over around 1785 from Bristol, and died in Camden NC. Imagine my suprise when I saw that Richard lived in Bristol in the home of his Uncle Richard, had a father named Robert, and also had an Uncle William who was in charge of the docks at Bristol. All were merchants...all owned ships. However, in the will of Richard Lloyd Champion he asks his "friend" William Champion to see that his wishes were carried out. While, I do think the William Champion he is referring to is likely William, Sr. I don't think he would call his Uncle, his friend. It is possible that as merchants they traveled back and forth to Bristol, so it is very possible that William Sr. was settled here earlier than his nephew. I found a record in London where Hart Champion witnessed a baptism. They did travel back and forth more often than we think. So that is one theory.

My favorite theory of the moment is this. Did you know that there was a William Champion who immigrated as a child to Virginia around 1653? And did you know that not only were Orlando and Edward Champion buying land in Chowan Cnty NC in the early 1700's, but so was William Champion? He purchased land in 1716. From 1705 until 1720 the only Champion's I can find land records for in Chowan County are Orlando, Edward, and William. Could the William who purchased land in Chowan Cnty in 1716 be the forefather of the William, Sr. line? (It's horrible to think of having another William to Research. I know one of the theories out there is that John Champion m Susannah are the parents of William, Sr. However, the William who bought land in 1716 would be too old to be their child. If he was at least 21 when he purchased the land, he would be born around 1695. Have we focused so much on the Edward Champion m Priscilla Champion that we've overlooked some other explanation? Who is this William, and who is the underage William who came over in 1653? Are they the same person? What do you guys think?
