Connie,
The name "Buck" is quoted, which indicates it was a nickname, but are you sure this is the case and that Buck wasn't his middle name? The surname Buck is an old and honored one, and I just wonder if he might have been named for a maternal grandfather if not an inlaw or just a friend of the family. To me this period we're talking about just seems very early for people to be recording their nicknames in public records.
