Lesley,
Have you learned any more about John's birth date, or have any idea based on marriage date or children's birthdates? My people came from NC into the West Point, MS, area around 1842, and included a John Champion, B. 1789. I only know one child of his, Winship Green Champion, b. 1819, but he very well could have had a son named after himself who went west from there.
Just a thought, but I may have a whole nother branch to add to your pedigree, and you may have the same for me.
