It's good to see you included a son named John. I have a great-great-great grandfather named John Champion (B.1789) who was from NC. I have only been able to locate one John Champion in NC, and he was in Granville Co. His wife's name was Nancy, and he had at least one son (Winship Green Champion), who is in my direct line. If these are one and the same, I just came into hog heaven.
If they are the same, then your John Champion came from Surry, VA. I can get quite a bit of info on that one from the LDS Family History Center.
