Dear Pam: If you are looking for the Rosa Lee Champion (b. May 8, 1879; d. Sep 9, 1959) who married Robert Burford Carlton (b. Oct 2, 1862), I can help you for a few generations, then, I, too, draw a blank. You have many relatives living in Anderson Co. KY (county seat Lawrenceburg). Rosa was the daughter of William (Willie) Thomas Champion (b. May 4, 1845 Washington Co, KY) and Ann Mariah Peyton (b. Sept 24, 1849; d April 8, 1915) Ann was the daughter of Peter and Lois Wash Peyton. Children (info given to us by Mabel Carlton (whom I knew) and who died l-2 years ago). 1) Elvore/Elvaree m. Jim Switzer; 2) Edd went to California; 3) George Franklin (b. Nov 27, 1873 - d. May 5, 1899); 4) Mary Eliza (b. Oct 29, 1875) m. Sam Brumley; 5) Rose/Rosa m. Robert Carlton; 6) Emma C. m Albert Perry; 7) Tyler (twin b. Jan 8, 1881; d. July 1962. [Marvin Carlton brought him to Sheila's in Lawrenceburg where he lived until he died] 8) Schyler (twin b. Jan 8, 1881 - d. Jan 18, 1881); 9) William Thomas (Tom) b. Nov 27, 1882-d. Dec 9, 1955 m. Essie Grace; 10) Charles Vester (b. Oct 27, 1884 - d. Oct 30, 1904); 11) Dessie Lois (d. Fla); 12) Jessie Hermon (b. May 12, 1889 - d. Oct 17, 1954); 13) James Wallace (Ebon) m Laura Lancaster; 14) Peter Davis Champion m. Mary Brown. I wouldn't swear to that order since there are no dates for some.
Rosa's father, William T (Willie), was the son of Davis Champion (b. ca. 1805 don't know where) and Mary Ann Sweeney (b. ca. 1822 - d. 1897 Anderson Co.) Rudd (marriage 1 to older Mr. Rudd who died not longer at marriage) (Davis was marriage 2 for Mary Ann and father of all her children). Davis lived in Washington Co Ky (co seat Springfield) and met her when he came to survey the estate of her late husband, James or William Rudd. Davis m. Mary on Oct 10, 1841 by George W. Coons, minister in Washington Co KY. Their children: Emily, Mary, and Frankie (never lived to adulthood; dates unclear); Willie, Arietta (m. Polk Toll), Mankin Charles b. 1853 - d. after 1909; my line- Mank) (m. Sarah Frances Mullins b. 1855 - 1891), Gustavus Adolphus (Dol) m. (Phoebe Bell Mullins, cousin of Sarah Frances).
I cannot prove by records any earlier than this, but a hand-drawn family tree by Uncle Dol who was a "revenuer" and careful notetaker (based on oral tradition) lists Davis' parents as Thomas and Nancy Cannon Champion. They are in the 1790 census in Mercer Co. living near the Shakertown area. They had 7 sons: Davis, Mankin, Jake, Steve, John, Jim and Edd. No daughters are listed on the chart and order of sons unknown. A John Champion m. Mary/May Cannon on 11/8/ 1794 in Mercer Co (bondsman Edward Davis). I speculate John and Thomas were brothers or uncle and nephew but cannot prove anything except they are next to each other in the 1790 census as head of households. 1795 Mercer Tax list: John has l horse; Thomas 3 horses and 8 cattle; then both move to Washington Co. (not far) by 1800. There fellow family researchers and I cannot separate the children of both men. Where Thomas and Nancy and John and Mary came from originally I do not know. I find a Sarah Champion buried at Shakertown (born PA). This could be. There are Champions moving westward through PA, through Berkeley Co VA (now W VA - Martinsburg, co. seat), what would be easter Ohio, and into this area -- a common wagon train trail. No proof. If you find this, bonanza!
Sweeneys - Mary Ann (Davis' Champion's wife) was the daughter of Willie Sweeney. We cannot find Willie's wife's name, date or place of marriage, or her death. We also do not know for sure Mary Ann's siblings. Willie live with Davis and Mary Ann when they moved to Anderson Co. and brought younger children along with him so we suppose he was a widower. We think Willie (b. Va ca 1784) is the oldest son of Joseph (B. Feb 28, 1760 Amherst Co. VA and Nancy Whitten (b. May 1764) Sweeney (m. Dec 5, 1781 Amherst Co. VA). Joseph was Pvt in Capt Jarboe's Virginia Line, 41st or 42nd Regiment in Rev War. Joseph and Nancy move to Lincoln Co KY about 1787.
Joseph was the son of Moses Sweeney (b. 1734 in Antrim, Belfast, Ireland. Upon coming to America (date?) he settled in Amherst Co VA and m. Elizabeth Johnson, native of NJ, who was living in Amherst Co. Moses and Elizabeth seemed to have moved with Joseph and Nancy and other Whittens and Sweeney relations to Lincoln Co., probably in the same wagon train. My cousin and I actually found Moses' grave there. After his death Elizabeth went to live with a son and is buried in Washington Co. KY.
I can give you more information, but none earlier. A few cousins and I meet over the internet and every few years in person if you'd like to join us. Do you live in Ky?
