I hope that this information will help all of you in your common quest!
My mother has been researching her family tree for the past thirty years (without leaving Winnipeg & without the Internet!). I've been surfing the net for her to see what other information I can find. My grandmother's maiden name was "Campeau".
A very brief summary of the earliest ancestors my mother was able to find is:
Sir Louis, early 1500's
Leonard (son of Sir Louis)
Etienne (son of Leonard & most likely the first to come from France to North America)
Etienne had 15 (I think) children, two of whom (Michel & Jacques) were followers of Cadillac in Detroit.
She has a lot more information on these ancestors, of course, but I don't have it with me here at work!
My mother has also come across these different spellings of "Campeau":
Also, she obtained the following from "Corel Family Tree Maker: Family Name Histories":
Guillaume de Champeaux (12th century) was the Bishop of Salon-sur Mame in Picardy, Brittany.
In the 16th & 17th centuries, the family branched out to Ile-et-Vilaine, Artois, de Pregouet, du Greis and Bonabry in Brittany as well as Champagne, de la Boulaye, Bourgoigne, and Limosine.
In 1909, a Campeau (I'm not certain if she gave me this person's "given name") married into the Grimaldy family of the Royal House of Monaco. This branch became known as the "Campou Grimaldy-Regusse" line. My mother says there was more after this, but she was unable to access it.
(I hope I have all the spellings of the cities/towns correct because she gave this info to me over the phone!)
THERE IS A RATHER EXTENSIVE "GENFORUM" ON THIS SAME WEB-SITE FOR "CAMPAU" AND I CAME ACROSS ANOTHER SITE YOU SHOULD ACCESS:
YOU SHOULD CHECK OUT BOTH OF THESE! My mother has been cross-checking her records against the info I printed from these two sites, but I haven't heard back from her yet.
I haven't had a chance to check the internet for the other spellings or to corroborate the historical information my mother found in the Corel Family Tree Maker. IF YOU'RE ABLE TO FIND ANYTHING USING THIS INFORMATION, PLEASE POST A NEW MESSAGE TO LET US ALL KNOW!
