We have been in touch before; about two years ago.
Since then I have visited the Somerset Record Office and although i didn't have long there (it's a long way for a day trip!) I vaguely recall seeing a bastardy certificate for John Champ identifying him as the son of Stephen.
I think I sent you a copy of the tree I had for this family group but if I didn't I can remit.
You are right that John married twice. I have
John b Castle Cary c 1783
Married 1. Ann WOOLMINGTON 8 Jan 1809 Ilminster
1 Charlotte b 18 June bt 9 July 1809 Ilminster Old Mtg
2 Thomas b c 1810 Married Maria JONES 1 July 1844 St George the Martyr No children I think he died 1859
3 Richard possibly a twin Married Patience DOMMETT. He died 1846 and she remarried George REDDING
4 Theophilus bt 4 February 1816 Wyke Regis No other details
5 Jane bt 4 February 1816 Wyke Regis she marr Samuel COBB 17 Sept 1835 at East Stoke
6 Charles bt 4 February 1816 Wyke Regis No other details but I think he must have died as an infant
7 Charles bt 11 April 1819 Wyke Regis. Marr Mary DOCWRA 13 March 1842 at St Marylebone. She d 1856 but I do not know what happened to him.
8 Caroline bt 31 December 1820 Wyke Regis no other details
Ann died in Weymouth RD in Jun qtr 1838.
John married 2 Kezia SAMSON
1 Cecelia b 1841 She married John REVELL but I have found no entry in the GRO marriages. However, she is living with him and her niece Alice CHAMP (Thomas's daughter) at 4 Esmeralda Road Bermondsey in 1881.
2 Thomas b 25 April 1843 d 4 August 1846
3 Thomas b c1848 d Fulham 24 Feb 1906
4 Sophia b 15 July 1845
I think you corresponded with Len Heath and he would I expect have confirmed Thomas's descendants.
I also saw at the Somerset RO a settlement certificate for John's father Stephen confirming his move from Axminster.
John was a carpenter, as indeed Stephen was and most of his children went into the building line. Stephen also married twice and there is a range of about 30 years between his eldest son John and the youngest Elizabeth b 1814. Stephen d in the Chard RD Dec qtr 1838.
John is in the Weymouth Union Workhouse in the 1861 and 1871 censuses so it is likely that Kezia had died sometime between 1851 and 1861 although I have failed to find any evidence of her death.
I hope this helps. If you want further info (and the trees) I can e-mail
