There was a Christopher Chamney about 1760 in three VA counties--probably the same person. Sources: Cumberland Co., VA Order Book, 1758-1762, page 290 (Library of Virginia Reel #76); Halifax Co., VA Pleas, No. 3 (Court Orders) 1759-1762, pages 21, 72, 111 (Lib. of VA Reel #55); and Prince Edward Co. County Court Orders #2, 1759-1762 (Lib. of VA Reel #21). A Mr. Chamnis (Champney) was noted in the Virginia State Land Office. Patents No. 34, 1756-1762 (Lib. of VA Reel #33-34), page 522. Champes (variation of Champney/Champnis) continued to be found in the 1750s and 1760s in Prince William and King George Counties, VA. By 1760, John Jr., William and other Champes are noted in Loudon Co., VA out toward MD. My line is most likely associated with Christopher Champney/Champnis in Cumberland Co., VA. This is the area where my Coleman family was residing--same time, same place--there probably is a match in here. Of historical note, King William County was the county where Virginia allowed a large group of French Protestant refugees to settle beginning in 1700 and 1701. However, I do not find the Champnis/Champney name on the original first ships' manifests in 1700 and 1701. There is probably a story here with that French settlement that needs to be further explored. If you find anything new that looks promising, I would love to hear about merits.
