Erastus(6) Chamberlain, b. 27 Sep 1782, Newbury, Orange Co., VT [Joseph(5), Richard(4), Nathaniel(3), Joseph(2), Richard(1)], is definitely someone else. He married Betsey Goodall, Sep 1805 there, with at least 9 children listed for them - not the children you have listed for your Erastus & Dorcas. The family lived there in Newbury for many years on the old homestead, then went to Canada for awhile (to Henryville, Iberville Dist., by 1842, where his daughter Elizabeth was married, then later to Livingston Co., NY, where he died. After his death, his widow returned to the old home in Newbury, in 1856, and she died 15 Sep 1863. There is definitely no record of any second marriage - Betsy Goodall was his first wife and she survived him, as noted above. So, whatever source "on another genealogy site" you are quoting, is just plain wrong. The Erastus Chamberlin you have been researching was born c1774, VT (per the 1850 Census), and his marriage to Dorcas Follett, 12 Sep 1802, in Thetford, Orange Co., VT, is recorded in the Thetford Town Records, as you are aware. She didn't die until 1865. Obviously, either she or Erastus probably lived there at the time of their marriage, one would suppose. They had 6 known children, the first ones of which were born in Barton Twp., Orleans Co., VT, beginning 7 Oct 1803, which, of course, indidates that he was living there at the time, not in Thetford. My guess is that Dorcas lived there in Thetford (there are some Folletts buried there that I mentioned to you earlier, as I recall), and Erastus is probably closely related to a Chamberlain/lin family who lived there in Thetford, too. The best bet for the individual you are seeking is yet another Erastus(6) Chamberlain [Amos(5), John(4), John(3), Benjamin(2), Richard(1)], b. 15 May 1781, Thetford, Orange Co., VT, who some sources say died young in 1782, but who is evidently the person listed in Barton, VT in 1810 and 1820. Living nearby were his brothers Amos and William. - 1810 Census, Barton, Orleans Co., VT, p. 446, Erasts Chamberlin: 1001-3001 (age 26-45) - 1820 Census, Barton, Orleans Co., VT, p. 310, Erastus Chamberlin: 210001-22101 (age 26-45), 1 person engaged in Agriculture This Erastus(6) is identified as LN#796 in the formal lineages of the Chamberlain genealogist, David Conrad Chamberlin, Sr., whose Family Group Record lists this information. DCC lists nothing more about this Erastus - not what became of him after 1820, nor the identity of his wife and children, but I do believe that this is very likely the family you are researching. My research notes here indicate that Amos(5) [LN757] (whose detailed Rev. War service is well documented), lived with his family in Thetford, VT at the time of the 1790 Census, left there about 1791, moved his family north to Barton, VT, and died near there in Devan, Canada in 1791; his estate was administered , 10 Jun 1796. Erastus' brother Amos(6) [LN790], for instance, had several children born in Orange Co., VT through 1800, then 3 more between 1807 and 1813 in Barton, Orleans Co., then moved with his family to Bergen, Genesee Co., NY by c1815. I'm wondering, while writing this long account, whether land records there in Barton might well show a land transfer between Amos and one of his brothers, such as Erastus, c1813-1814. Please contact me via Email if you wish to discuss this information in greater detail. We should also discuss the possibility of using DNA analysis to determine whether your family is indeed descended from Richard(1) Chamberlain, many of whose direct descendants in this same line through John(4) have already had their DNA test results made available to us Chamberlain researchers. For your information, I myself am descended from John(4)'s son, Benjamin(5), who married Jerusha Green, and I'm particularly interested to learn more about the origins of your Erastus, for this reason. Welton Chamberlain, first President of the World Chamberlain Genealogical Society, also descends from John(4)'s son Ezekiel(5), by the way. This family has been rather thoroughly researched by Welton and his mother over the last 80 years, I know, and by other major Chamberlain researchers, but I suspect that land, probate and other records in Orleans Co., VT may reveal more about your Erastus. You said he died in Coventry, Orleans Co., VT, but I didn't have that information here, and would like to learn more from you about his death date, place, burial, gravestone inscription, obituary, etc., and whether you've attempted to find land and probate records for him and for his wife Dorcas, who died there 11 Oct 1865. I look forward to hearing back from you by Email, so we can have a thorough discussion, but not within GenForum, if you don't mind. But I did intentionally list a whole lot of data here, in this very long message on GenForum, primarily for the benefit of other researchers who might read this message at a later date, and lend us a hand.
