The Personal Property Tax lists did not give information about the actual locations of the district. Basically the third district was between the first (northwest section of the county) and the second (southeast section east of Goose Creek) and included the Leesburg area. The (M.) was not an initial. It no doubt was the abbreviation for Mountain. I'm sure the commissioner knew what mountain it represented but the lists themselves did not explain. The land was purchased in 1826, but the actual deed was not delivered to the new owner until 1832. That could have been the year when the land was paid in full. Minute Book 7, 13 June 1826 [p. 309] Letters of Administration granted Hugh SMITH as Admr. with will annexed with Lloyd NOLAND as security and $5,000 bond for estate of Saml. DAVIS dec'd. William DAVIS & Jno. L. DAGG the Exors. named in will by H. B. POWELL relinquished. The only will recorded for a Samuel Davis in Loudoun is, from "Index to Loudoun Co. Wills 1757-1850" by Hutchison: DAVIS, Samuel Book:Page O:270 Date of will: 29 Oct 1821 Received in Court: 8 Sep 1823 McConneley, Jane, Daughter Garrett, Nancy, Daughter Hoffman, Mary, Daughter Bunnell, Elizabeth, Daughter Dagg, Sarah, Daughter Dagg, Samuel's child, Gt-Gr-Son Davis, Samuel, Son Dagg, John L, Gr-Son Dagg, Samuel, Gr-Son, lately dec'd. Davis, Joseph, Son Davis, James, Son Davis, William, Son Davis, Sarah, Wife, dec'd. by 3/13/23 Davis, Harriet, Gr-Daughter, daughter of William Powell, Burr, witness Frey, Philip, witness Helleard, James, witness Bitzer, Harmon, witness Codicil of 13 Mar 1823. From the above, it may be that this is not correct Samuel Davis. Pat Duncan GenNutLdn@msn.com Notify Administrator about this message?
