For the benefit of other researchers, Penny Kresl- latest Email address: pennykresl@charter.net- has been trying for years, with the help of other genealogists including myself, to trace the origins of her John Chamberlain, born 2 Jul 1784, NJ, who married Mary Little, daughter of Mathias Little and Elizabeth Beardsley. Her John is the son of John Chamberlain and Matilda or Margaret Atherton, according to Penny's records. There are numerous postings, by Penny and others, concerning this family of hers, in both Ancestry.com and in GenForum sites online. Anyone who can help more with this matter is most welcome to contact me or Penny directly. I am James B. Parker, Email: jbparker@provide.net. With regard to the John Chamberlain who married Thankful Mallory in Branford or Guilford, New Haven Co., Connecticut, according to my records here, they were married, 7 Jul 1721 [accuracy of this date somewhat uncertain], in Guilford, with three known daughters born in 1721, 1724 and 1725/26 in Guilford and Branford. Their daughter Thankful married John Perkins, Jr., of New Haven; daughter Mary married Samuel Parker of Wallingford & Bristol, CT; and daughter Abigail married Hezekiah Lewis of Wallingford. So, very little is known about this John Chamberlain who married Thankful Mallory. His origins are unknown, and what became of him after 1725 is unknown. I have nothing in my records here to connect these two John's together, as Penny is trying to do. Here are my actual research "NOTES," quoting the great Chamberlain genealogist of the last generation, Mr. Prentiss Glazier of Florida, and other records I've seen elsewhere. Prentiss' two-volume typescript book, entitled, Chamberlain Families of Early New England and New York, c1973, has served as a priceless resource for many of us Chamberlain researchers in more recent years. You can probably make out his cryptic abbreviations, as I have had to do - all of his book is written this way! NOTES for John Chamberlain who married Thankful Mallory: Prentiss Glazier, Vol. 1, p. 54, provides the following account: "JOHN, (not ident.), mariner of East Haven, bought house and land at Branford, 1723(?). John, mariner of Guilford, m. at G., 172"7" (pr. 1/2), of New Haven; they had at G., Thankful, Mary, & Abig. Wid. Thankful bot at Guil., 1730, sold in 1735, No indic. of Ct. origin for John, (b. say ca. 1680-95); if of Mass., per. either unrec. s. "Mariner of Boston", of Thos., Jr. of Chelmsford, or (b) John, b. Hull, 16??, s. Nath'l." IGI & PRF files list John's wife as Thankful Mallory and the marriage date as 7 Jul 1727, Guilford, New Haven Co., CT. However, the correct date is more likely 7 Jul 1721, as shown here. These records list his birth c1690, "of New Haven, CT", and an LDS Ancestral File lists his birth 1 Aug 1689, Litchfield, CT, son of Jacob and Mary Child; data submitted by Calvin M. Henry, 13659 Bolero Dr., Sun City West, AZ 85375-4738. But this is obviously incorrect; numerous records, including DCC's FGR, list John Chamberlain [LN7585], b. 1 Aug 1689, Roxbury, MA, son of these parents, and grandson of Edmund(1); this particular John(3) married 1) Esther Alcock, 2) Hannah Bowen, with three known children baptized at West Roxbury, MA. END OF NOTES DCC is David Conrad Chamberlin, Sr., a leading Chamberlain genealogist of the present generation, a friend and associate of mine, who died a few years ago, and whose records I maintain here. He didn't list the John Chamberlain who married Thankful Mallory in his records, unfortunately, but his formally prepared Family Group Records do identify the family of Jacob Chamberlain and Mary Child, with their son John identified as #LN7585, as listed in my research notes above. Please note that the John Chamberlain who married Thankful Mallory was born c1700 or so (he bought land in 1723), whereas the John Chamberlain who married Matilda/Margaret Atherton was born perhaps about 1735 or so, since his son John was born between 1758 and 1762. They are from different generations, it would seem. Please also note that John who married Thankful Mallory was dead by 1730. Before quitting this letter, I'd be remiss if I did not mention that it has been proven that Penny Kresl's John Chamberlain was NOT the same person as John, brother of Benjamin Ch'n, b. 1746, who married Martha Byram - a well-known and well-documented line in New Jersey that descends from William(1). Penny will recall her extensive correspondence with me and with DCC years ago, on this subject. So, this information might be helpful to anyone, including Penny Kresl, who is interested in learning more about John Chamberlain who married Thankful Mallory.
