It's a small world!According to my database notes, your Andrew Murray is buried in St. Patrick's Catholic Church Cemetery, Northfield Twp., Washtenaw Co., MI, just 3 miles from my own home from whence I'm sending you this message.I pass right by that cemetery every time I drive into Ann Arbor.Andrew came over with the British to fight America (1812?), then defected, it says.Good for him.
Your Joseph Chamberlain, b. 1747 in Detroit, originally spelled his name Chamberland, it seems.Data I have come primarily from the Chamberlain Chain, Vol. 13, p. 20, Branch 76, submitted by Danell Aukerman, a descendant of Daniel & Mary Louisa (Chamberlain) Murray.[Contact the editor, Carolyn Weidner, Email: [email protected]].Also from World Family Tree CD-ROM #3, lineage #5692 (which traces the line of son Louis).Data also from GenServe system, records of Barb Pepper of Parma, MI.Evidently the parents of Mary Louisa, b. 16 Apr 1801 in Detroit, have not yet been actually proven. She is one of 9 children listed for Joseph & Josephine "Josette" (Larose) Chamberland/Chamberlain, the eldest of which is Louis Chamberland, b. c1795, Detroit, about whom we have a good deal of information. The GenServ data indicates that Josephine Larose was "fille d'une sauvagesse" (the daughter of a savage), citing the Genealogy of Down River Families.Josephine was born 1770 and buried Jan. 14, 1829, St. Antoine, Monroe Co., MI.She was Joseph's second wife - I have no record of his first wife.
None of these sources indicate the origins of this family, but my records indicate that there were early French Canadian Chamberland's (also spelled Chanverlange) in Detroit very early on.They may very well come from the very prolific line of Rene Chamberlain/land of Chantonnay, Poitou, France, whose son Simon d. c1688 in Quebec City (there are many published lineages (on WFT CD-ROMs) for descendants in this family, but none I've yet seen that connect to your Joseph b. 1747, unfortunately).
I suggest you obtain the sources cited, correspond if possible with those persons who submitted the information, and contact the Detroit Genealogical Society, also the Monroe County Genealogical Society, for additional information about this family.
