For the benefit of other Chamberlain researchers, Arthur Fanshaw Chamberlain (or Chamberlin) was born 9 Oct 1857, probably Oklahoma, one of eight known children of Rev. Amory Nelson(7) Chamberlain, b. 29 Nov 1821, Brainard Mission, Hamilton Co., Tennessee, d. 4 Jul 1894, Pheasant Hill, Oklahoma, who was married, 3 Dec 1846, to Dorothy "Dolly" Eunice Hoyt, b. 14 Dec 1820, Willstown, Alabama, d. 21 Jul 1894, Pheasant Hill, Oklahoma, daughter of Dr. Milo Hoyt and Lydia Lowery. The ancestral line of descent is listed as: William(6), Moses(5), Moses(4), Nathaniel(3), Joseph(2), Richard(1) Chamberlain, one of the five original Chamberlain immigrant ancestors in early New England. My research notes state that Amory was a Civil War veteran (C. S. A.) and missionary to the Cherokee Indians in Oklahoma. His story was told in an article printed in "Old West Magazine", 1971. He traveled with the tribe to Indian Territory on the Trail of Tears. He translated the Bible into Cherokee (archived at the Library of Congress). Ordained to the gospel ministry of the Presbyterian Church of the USA at Muskogee in 1883 at the age of 62. Dolly was a member of the well known Hoyt family of Tennessee, and granddaughter of the famed Cherokee Chief, George Lowery. Reverend Ard Hoyt had established Brainerd Mission to serve the Cherokees. Her sister was Mrs. Hamilton Balentine, the former Nancy Anna Hoyt. Dorothy died 17 days after the death of her husband and is buried with him in Pheasant Hill Cemetery, Vinita, OK, near the site of the mission he had started.
