Questions re. JOANNA CHAMBERLAIN (for James B. Parker)
Hello James -- you appear to be one of the leading experts on the Chamberlain forum, so I thought I'd address this to you.
I am a direct descendent of Joanna Chamberlain-Betts through the following line:myself (Ruth Andrews-Vreeland) > Joseph E. Andrews > Margaret Elizabeth Garton-Andrews > George Henry Garton > Margaret Elizabeth Hart-Garton > William Michael Hart > Hugh Hart > Daniel Hart > Deborah Scudder (married to John Hart the Signer) > Richard Betts Scudder, Jr. > Richard Betts Scudder, Sr. > John Scudder, Jr. + wife Joanna Betts (daughter of Captain Richard Betts and Joanna Chamberlain-Betts.)
Based on what I’ve been reading in the Chamberlain forum, I’m learning I can’t really rely on ANYTHING I've found on the LDS site “FamilySearch.org” about this line, because quite a few of the pedigree charts there take this part of the Chamberlain family all the way up to English royalty and beyond, and it's all based on false claims? My Chamberlain connection is through my Dad’s family, and interestingly enough, the “royal line” listed for them on "FamilySearch.org" is identical to one for my Mother’s family through her ancestor Ethan Grant Satterlee. It’s because of things like this, I’ve learned to be suspicious and quite unbelieving now of many of the Mormon Gedcom files recently since learning of the “con-artist genealogists” of the early 1900’s who sold “royal pedigrees” to people here in the states seeking their European roots. As for me, I want to know the substantiated truth, so I won't be making false claims.
I’m reading there is also much doubt as to who Joanna Chamberlain’s parents were. If she WAS the daughter of “Robert” Chamberlain, does anyone yet know who Robert was, where he came from and if he may have had ANY ties to Henry Chamberlain, for whom the speculative “FamilySearch.org” genealogy traces back to Lord Chamberlain (arriving in England with William the Conqueror)? And how much of Henry’s line is actually documented and proven? Does he indeed go back to John of Tankerville, and then what about the offshoots of that tree (as listed on the LDS site) for the ties with the Knevett family, going back through the Staffords and then up to the Kings of England? Is ANY of this true? I’m lost as to the validity of some of these connections, and just want the record set straight.
Also, I’m very confused about my own Joanna Chamberlain’s line . . . apparently she was the daughter of Robert Chamberlain and Elizabeth Stoughton-Scudder-Chamberlain (Eliz. who was married to John Scudder first)? But the Scudder family forum says that Elizabeth Stoughton was married to Thomas Scudder (not John), and that John Scudder, Sr. was married to Mary King (b. 1623). My own records then state that John Scudder, Jr. was married to Joanna Betts (daughter of Joanna Chamberlain-Betts and Captain Richard Betts.) So how could Elizabeth have been married to either of the John Scudders? Perhaps I’ve received some misinformation along the line somewhere?
Thanks so much for anything you can offer me to straighten this out. I will be forever in your genealogical debt.
