This posting is intended to clarify (I hope) the somewhat confusing information I listed previously, concerning two different Chamberlain families with a Joshua who went to Detroit in the early 1800s.Considerable intensive research has been conducted during the past couple of years, which show that Ezekiel Chamberlain, b. c1775, prob. NY, of York near Toronto, in 1797, whose wife was Mary "Meriby/Meribah" Schrandel, settled in the area of Dearborn & Inkster, Wayne Co., MI (near Detroit) and had several children including Joshua, b. c1800 who married Mary Ruff, etc.Ezekiel died perhaps about 1827 in Dearbornville, Wayne Co., MI, we believe. This family is connected, we believe, with a Joshua Sr., a merchant, and his sons Joshua Jr. and Ezekiel (probably the same Ezekiel who went to Detroit/Dearborn), who owned land (pioneer settlers) in York, Ont. as early as 1796, and also directly across the lake in Gates/Northampton, Ontario/Monroe Co., NY c1800.We don't know what became of Joshua Sr. and his son Joshua Jr., as yet, after c1803, nor do we know who else belonged to this family.DNA tests of descendants have confirmed descent from William(1)[or his brothers Thomas(1) and Edmund(1)], and we've established a tentative lineage for this family, wherein Joshua Sr. is probably the same person as Joshua(5), b. c1752, prob. MA, who married Agatha Kincaid, with two known sons, Pierce and Isaac, [Joshua(4), Thomas(3), Daniel(2), William(1)] Chamberlain.
The Joshua(5) who settled in Pontiac, Oakland Co., MI, who married Sarah Brown, and whose son was Dr. Olmstead(6) Chamberlain, was born 31 Jul 1762, Stockbridge, Berkshire Co., MA, and was living in Richmond, Chittenden Co., VT at the time of the 1800 and 1810 census, then at Lewiston, Niagara Co., NY in 1817, we know, then was in Detroit by 1820; he died in Pontiac, 20 Feb 1827.Lots is known about this family. So, this was a separate family, we believe, a distant cousin of the other Joshua of Detroit and descended from the same root immigrant ancestor by this line: John(4), John(3), John(2), William(1).
