Since Joe was kind enough to mention my name with regard to our ongoing research on George Marvin Frey, Sr., (1878, TX-1973, Hugo, Choctaw Co., OK) and his wife Mattie, I thought it appropriate to add a few words of my own about our findings to date:
Several days ago, Joe Nelson and I had an interesting e-mail exchange about the maiden name of the woman we had assumed to be Mattie Jennie Chamberlain, the wife of George Marvin Frey, Sr., of Hugo, OK:
1)First, he forwarded to me a message that he said he had just received (Dec. 28) from Frey researcher Trinda Zukosky, in which she made the following remark:
“All I know is that Mattie was MarvinFrey'ssecond wife.My mother remembers very little about her but did say that Mattie was her step-grandmother.However, the time I met Marvin Jr. , we were talking about ancestry, and he said that his mother Mattie's last name was Michael's I believe not Chamberlain but I'm not sure if Michael's was her maiden name prior to being a Chamberlain then a Frey!”
2)Here is my reply of Dec. 29:
“Joe,
Thanks for the latest message, along with the copy of Trinda's e-mail re George Marvin Sr.'s second wife. For some time now, I have had my doubts about the Chamberlain surname of our Mattie, at least at the point that she married GM Sr.Following are some notes on GM Sr. and Mattie that I've accumulated over the last few wks.
Remember the 1930 census for Jeter, Choctaw Co., OK, in which Mattie appears with GM as her husband, with several Frey children, AND with several Whitson children (who are designated as stepchildren to GM)?
Well, I think that this jibes totally both with my notes and with what Trinda has to say about GM Jr.'s remarks to her about his mother's maiden name being "Michaels."It appears to confirm the suspicions that I have had (and not expressed for lack of conclusive proof).
Here are my notes:
1)George Marvin, Sr.
1880 Census, Caldwell Co., TX(w/ parents)
1900 Census, McCulloch Co., TX
1930 Census, Choctaw Co., OK(Jeter)
Obits of Frey siblings give his place of residence as Hugo, OK.
Supposedly called "G. Marvin Frey."One source, however, lists him as"Marvin G. Frey."On the 1880 Caldwell Co., TX, census, he is identified as "George M. Frey."
A "Marvin Fry," b. Feb. 1878 is also listed on the 1900 McCulloch Co., TX, census. His POB and those of his parents are listed as "unknown."Wife's name is recorded as "Eugenia."She is listed as having been b. in Sep. 1881 in TX, but her parents' POBs are "unknown."
According to an 8 Mar. 2005 post by Trinda Zukosky on the Yocham board of Ancestry.com, a Eugenia Yocham "married Marvin Frey in 1899 in Texas. Her parents are Asa and Rosa Ella Yocham."(Indeed, an Asa Mack Yocham, b. AR, and wife Rosa Ella Jordan, b. GA, are also mentioned on Trinda Zukosky's gedcom on RootsWeb's WorldConnect as being the parents of Eugenia and others.)
Trinda also notes that "Marvin was a barber in Lawton,OK. around 1907. He then moved his family to Goree,TX for a few years than [sic] returned to live in Wilson,OK. "
There is a burial for a a "G.M. Frey," b. 3 Mar. 1878, d. 1 Feb. 1973, in Mt. Olivet Cem., Choctaw Co., OK.There is also a WWI registration card for a "George Marvin Frey," b. 3 Mar. 1876 (not 1878) for Choctaw Co., OK.Residence is listed as Hugo, Choctaw Co., OK.Dau Gracie is listed as closest relative.(Note Gracie must have been listed since 1st wife Eugenia had just died in 1915--Trinda says from pleurisy.)
2)Mattie (one source calls her "Mattie Z. Mikeal"):
1930 Census, Choctaw Co., OK(Jeter)
Called "Mattie Jennie Chamberlain" in the records of Joe Nelson and Maureen Chamberlain.
A "Mattie C. Mikel," b. Nov. 1893, is listed on the 1900 census for Jack Co., TX, in the household of parents Fred, 34, and Tully Mikel, 30.Fred's POB is given as Switzerland, while wife Tully is said to have been b. in TX.
A District Court notice published in the 25 Sep. 1924 issue of"The Jacksboro Gazette" states:"Mattie Whitson vs. Arthur Whitson, divorce granted."
There is also on Rootsweb's WorldConnect a listing for an "William Arthur Whitson" (or maybe "Authur Whitson") married to a "Mattie Mikeal" or "Mattie Mikel" with a few kids listed. Here too are the notes I've pieced together for Wm. Arthur Whitson:
His signature on WWI draft reg'n card seems to read "William Arthur Whitson," not"Authur."
One source on FamilySearch claims he was b. on 6 Feb. 1890 in Hill Co., TX.His WWI draft reg'n card for Jack Co., TX, however, gives DOB as 6 Feb. 1891 and indicates that he is married with two children.SSDI shows a "William Whitson," b. 6 Feb. 1891, TX, who d. in Jul. 1964 in NM.TX Death Index, however, lists the death of a "William Arthur Whitson" as having occurred in Castro Co., TX, on 17 Jul. 1964.
There is also a listing for a William Arthur Whitson, widowed,in the Castro Co., TX, death index, likewise with a DOD of 17 Jul. 1964.
I think I have also run across other mentions of Arthur and Mattie in queries.
What do you think?
Bob”

This, then, is more or less where our research on George Marvin Frey, Sr., stands at the moment.Obviously, we are indebted a great deal to Trinda Zukosky’s research, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank her for her valuable contributions.
