Hello, Robert - I recognize you as WCGS member #272 in my Chamberlain/lin files/lineages here, so you probably already have all the information (and speculation) I'm about to offer - partially for the benefit of other researchers who may read your current GenForum posting, and want to know more, and who might have something else to offer.Yes, Daniel did exist, of course! He and his wife are buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Chester, NJ, just outside of Flanders per researcher Thea Dunkle. The detailed lineage I maintain here for this family indicates that Daniel was born 3 Jan 1798, Amwell Twp., Hunterdon Co., NJ [I'm not altogether sure of the exact source for the birth data - probably family records], d. 12 Dec 1868, Morris Co., NJ, and married 21 Sep 1822, Somerset Co., NJ, Mary Anne Rowland, b. 10 Aug 1803, NJ, d. 16 Nov 1877, Morris Co., NJ. 7 children are listed for them: 1) Lewis, b. 1 Jul 1824; 2) Rhymear Rowland, b. 4 Aug 1831; 3) George, b. c1832; 4) John Rowland, b. 1 Jan 1834; 5) Sarah Ann, b. 24 Jun 1837; 6) Elizabeth, b. 18 Feb 1841; 7) Amos, b. 30 Dec 1845.The first child, Lewis, was born there in Amwell Twp. in 1824, so one must presume that Daniel was living there at the time, though his 1822 marriage took place in another county. Please note that some of these given names do appear in earlier records for Chamberlin families living in this area, as I shall present below. Thus, one supposes that there should be some connection.
Daniel is probably the individual of this name listed in the 1830 and 1840 Census in Amwell Twp., Hunterdon Co., NJ, per researcher Michael Kuppens (I have the census data here if you need it).Listed in 1850 with his family in Washington Twp., Morris Co., NJ, and in 1860 in Chester Twp., Morris Co., NJ (evidently you already have these census data). The 1830 Census is of particular interest to me, listing 6 other Chamberlin families living there in Amwell Twp., with 5 of them in the same age bracket as Daniel - surely he is likely to be a brother or cousin to one or more of them.He is listed on the very next page from Amos Chamberlin [LN11158], son of Lewis [LN8539] & Sarah (Ege) Chamberlin - the family that I'd earlier speculated to be the best candidate for a match.Lewis's ancestors haven't been traced, at yet, and I've wondered whether your Daniel might be the same person as Lewis' son Daniel [LN11164], b. c1807?, prob. Hopewell, Middlesex Co., NJ, per David C. Chamberlin's FGR for this family [Hopewell became part of Mercer Co. in 1838], but the data simply don't match particularly well, as you can see.But this is still a possibility which I cannot totally discount, and I'd be pleased to discuss this with you in greater detail.
For your information, DCC has attempted to identify each of the Chamberlain/lins in the 1830 and 1840 Census, and has FGRs for most of them, too, so much work has already been done in this regard, to facilitate analysis of your Daniel's origins. With some luck and additional effort, the answer can probably be determined.
Thea Dunkle provided the following additional information about your Daniel:
- In 1838, Daniel Chamberlin bought 72 acres in the township of Amwell
- On 3/25/1840, Daniel sold 2.06 acres to Hiram Hoffman
- On 3/22/1842, Daniel Chamberlain & Mary Ann sold 70.11 acres to Aaron H. Trimmer
- Daniel ended up living in Flanders/Roxbury Township, Morris Co., NJ
No doubt Thea has already examined these land records for any other identifying information.I've not seen these records myself. My records don't indicate whether anyone has searched for any Will or Probate record for Daniel. What do you know about this? And, obviously, since he came from Amwell, Essex/Hunterdon Co., probate records for the earlier Chamberlain/lins who lived there should be sought out, to see whether one of them mentions this Daniel.
My records here include data gleaned from the formal lineages prepared by the Chamberlain genealogist, David Conrad Chamberlin, Sr., whose Family Group Record (FGR) for this family lists Daniel as #LN11143; parents unknown.I do know that DCC spent considerable time tracing all NJ Chamberlain/lins years ago, and obviously was unsuccessful in tracing this particular one.I myself have attempted to speculate about the identity of Daniel's parents, with little success, as I noted above - just speculation.Census data appear to be lacking from 1790 through 1820, which greatly hinders progress. However, I do have a list of individuals in a 1793 Census for this area, then part of Essex Co., NJ, for Amwell, as well as for Alexandria, Hopewell and Kingwood - a very nice list, indeed, though I don't have any data to match the names, as yet. But, the list is enough to begin to identify the various families in each of these 4 locations. So, in 1793, Amwell lists 3 persons: David, John and Lewis.I'm not yet sure who they are, but with more intensive effort, this should be determined. One possibility, for instance, is that they are perhaps David (7) [LN979], and his father Lewis(6) [LN951] [or Lewis' father Lewis(5) who was still alive] and Lewis (6)'s brother John(6) [LN946] [Lewis(5) [John(4), Henry(3), John(2), Henry(1)].Considerable information is available for this particular family. But I may have identified the wrong family, since they lived primarily in Kingwood, where a John and a William were listed in 1793.Another David lived in Alexandria in 1793, together with Godfrey, Jesse, John and William, and two Henrys lived in Hopewell.I could really use some help with this analysis!I'm mentioning all of this to give you some idea how I think the analysis should be approached, beginning with these Chamberlins listed there in Amwell in 1793.I'd be happy to work through all of this with you, if you wish, and see what we come up with.
Also, as you are aware, DNA analysis indicates that your Daniel is descended from William(2), Henry(1), though traditional genealogical analysis, such as I've provided above, suggests that Daniel should more likely be descended from John(2), Henry(1), who, for unknown reasons, has descendants whose DNA do NOT match the descendants in the William(2), Henry(1) line - still an unresolved mystery, I believe.Very confusing and confounding, indeed!Philip J. Chamberlain, who heads up the DNA project for the World Chamberlain Genealogical Society, is trying to figure this out.
So, please contact me via Email, if you wish to discuss this information at greater length, and what else might be done, over time, to begin to identify Daniel's parents, who must have been living there in Amwell Twp., Hunterdon Co., NJ in 1798, and probably much later than that (but not as late as 1830).I'd be very happy to help you with this difficult puzzle, if I can. And, of course, I'd like to hear from anyone else (who has the time to read through this long, rambling message), who might have something else to offer!
