I've tried to identify this Mary Chamberlain who married Benjamin Benson in my Chamberlain research files, without success.I see that you posted a similar query in the GenForum Benson site, where there are quite a number of earlier postings by Steve Benson, Craig Benson, and Richard H. Benson between June 1999 and April 2001.I also reviewed, in the Mormon/LDS Family Search site, an Ancestral file submitted by Norman Charles Pease, a Pedigree Resource File submitted by Timothy McLaughlin, both of which contain apparent errors, and another PRF by Steve Benson which has considerable detail on the Benson family/children.This PRF seems to be quite credible with regard to Benson data, but he lists Mary Chamberlain's birth 1743-1747, CT, daughter of Joseph Chamberlin, which does not match the other postings for her, and is probably just speculation on his part, I would suppose.I presume that the birth date cited by others for her (22 Feb 1734/35) may have come from her gravestone, but you are right to question the accuracy of this information. You may wish to correspond with him about this.
From what information has been provided (that which seems credible), Benjamin & Mary were married before 1764, and their first child, Rhoda, was born Oct. 1764 in either RI or in Rochester, Plymouth Co., MA, with other children born inTisbury. This seems based on Steve Benson's contention that Benjamin served as a private in the Rhode Island line in 1777, and that he lived in Wareham, Plymouth Co., MA (no dates provided), then Tisbury, Dukes Co., MA (now Martha's Vineyard from about 1779-1800, before moving to New Vineyard, Franklin, ME & died btw. 1810-1820 (other researchers say he died 1792 in Madison, Franklin Co., ME, but no source for this information is cited).I have not checked Census listings for him.
This history, then, if correct, suggests that Mary Chamberlain was most likely from Plymouth Co., MA, perhaps married there (not in Maine as you have suggested). There are numerous Mary Chamberlain or Chamberlin persons born during this period of time, many in MA, which makes positive identification difficult.Perhaps someone else can come up with a more accurate birth date/place for her, or something else that might help identify her better.
Regarding Madison, ME, it is now in Somerset Co., east of Franklin Co.Somerset Co. was formed 1808 from Kennebec, formed 1799 from Lincoln, formed 1760 from York.Franklin Co. was formed 1838 from Kennebec, Oxford & Somerset. So it is not altogether clear to me just what county Madison was located in at various times. The Town of Madison was incorporated 7 Mar 1804, in Barnard's Twp., but was settled earlier.GenWeb lists numerous cemeteries in the area, but I did not locate a GenWeb listing for Eustis Cemetery in Franklin Co., where Benjamin & Mary are said to be buried.I wanted to verify this info., but could not.I did see the town of Eustis listed, with 5 cemeteries listed. You may wish to check more carefully to see whether you can obtain the cemetery data for this family.
