This Susanna Chamberlain was the widow of William(4) [William(3), Clement(2), William(1)] Chamberlain, b. 13 Mar 1731/32, Billerica, MA.They had only one child, William(5), Jr., bpt. 23 Jan 1757, who was alive in 1772, with Timothy Wilkins his guardian [I have no information on descendants].Susanna administered the estate of her husband in 1758, so I presume she must have been of age at that time, thus born some time before 1737.Sources: Prentiss Glazier's Chamberlain Families...; Chamberlain Association News (I have copies of these sources here).
As Susanna Chamberlin of Billerica, she m. John Baldwin, 7 Mar 1769.The Baldwin Genealogy, by C. C. Baldwin, 1881 (I have a copy here), p. 695, provides this information: John (4) [William(3), John(2), John(1)] Baldwin, b. 13 Jan 1743/44, Billerica, MA, married (as "John 3rd"), 7 Mar 1769, Susannah Chamberlin, of Billerica."In 1805, his brother Oliver leaves property to the several children of his deceased brother John, to wit: Rebecca, Oliver and William.By a paper filed in Probate at East Cambridge, it appears that these children, being all children of John, were 'now absent,' and Jonathan Pollard was authorized to act for them in partition."Of these children, Rebecca was b. 8 Apr 1770; Oliver (was he of Lancaster, MA?), m. Lucy Hosley, of Billerica, 28 May 1800; William - nothing further.
Here, from my "notes" for William(4) Chamberlain, Jr. [data from CA News, Vol. 7, #3] is more about him:He was a housewright of Reading, MA, when he posted his bond.In the settlement of his father's estate in Billerica [Adm. 20 Nov 1738], the family homestead was assigned to him** and he lived there for the rest of his life. His widow Susanna Chamberlain administered his estate. She sold the real estate, a house and 48 acres to John Durant in Dec 1759/60 [Middlesex Deeds, 59:564].The property was on the highway leading to Chelmsford. The inventory of the estate mentions the dwelling house, 48 acres of land, 5 acres & 60 feet of ship timber, 200 shingles, pine timber, 1100 white oak staves and 1200 red oak staves.Several debts and notes on land were listed.Jonathan Spaulding of Chelmsford and Samuel Gookin of Cambridge were the widow's surties.
Were either of these surties perhaps relatives of hers?A Benoni Spaulding married Esther, William Chamberlain's widowed mother, in 1743.
** I have here the details from an agreement, dated 10 Jul 1753, dividing this estate, which provides much more information on this Chamberlain family, mentioning this William Chamberlain, his mother and his siblings, but not his wife - he probably wasn't yet married at the time.I can give you a copy of this info. if you like.
The IGI (Mormon online site) does have several entries for Susanna's marriage to John Baldwin, some of which appear to be incorrect, so beware.
That's all I can locate here on the subject here, with a couple of hours of searching, and hope that it is helpful to you.It would appear that the parents of this Susanna are unknown, and probably cannot be identified without extensive research. The most obvious candidate for a relative of hers, perhaps a brother, would be Timothy Wilkins, guardian of her son William Chamberlain. Please Email me if you have questions concerning this message.
