Dear Janice ~
Perhaps I can help, but maybe not. I too am looking for at least 2 generations of a John Chamberlain in NJ. My family data says, my 4th great grandfather John was born 1784 in Sussex Co NJ. The family record says his father was also a John b. about 1750(who married an Elenor Kinnan/Canaan.This John( Probably b. in CT, as he was said to be a young student at Yale and ran away to join the American Patriots during the Rev War.) My records say he was son of a John and a Mary or Margaret Matilda Atherton. I found a Dr. John in Amenia, NY(who was b. in CT) who might have been his father...still can't find proof. We are looking yet, and I am currently in contact with another lady who just got back from Salt Lake City LDS Research center.. Hope we can figure this out. But here's the thing. A kind Historian sent me a record of a Book called "Traditions of our Ancestors", page 123 and 124 talk about The Presbyterians in Kingwood. In it, a John Chamberlain b. 1742 died 1830 is mentioned with a wife Elenor b. 1752and I wondered if this was mine after all, but now I doubt it is them. There is also a Joseph b. 1732 who had a wife Amy listed at the same church. Might these be yours or connected to the ones James Parker talks of? Nothing more is mentioned of them, but that might be a place to start with those church records?
Incidently... my 3rd great grandfather was a James also, but he migrated from NJ to NY and then to WI by 1840.
Let me know if you want a copy of this. Hope this helps,
Penny Kresl
