Hello Maureen - it is good to hear from you again - you can contact me directly via Email, too, if you wish: [email protected]
The information that prompted me to list John as father of Ninian(1), is from data sent me by researcher Thelma Deveney (who is unrelated to this Ninian line), with photocopies of many typed pages of records compiled by a Jesseye Dickerman of NYC (undated, but many years ago), who was attempting, unsuccessfully, to see if there was any relationship between her York Co. PA Jeremiah/Ninian Chamberlains and the ones in NC/TN.Specifically, it included a condensed transcription of the Will of Andrew Chamberlain (Ninian's grandson), from Jefferson Co., Dandridge Court House, Will Bk. #1, p. 12: Andrew Chamberlain departed this life Feb. 4, 1793....his brother, Jeremiah...property divided into six parts betwixt Jeremiah, John, "Meary, Margret, Elizabeth and Jenet........and that his father Nenian Chamberlain son of John Chamberlain.......Mary and Jenet daughters of Jeremiah Chamberlain...... (etc.)
But I neglected to check another version of this Will, submitted by Joan Williams of Spotsylvania, VA, and published in Chamberlain Chain, Vol. 9, p. 3, also citing Jefferson Co. Will Book 1, 1792-1810 (NSDAR Library), page 12 "... Andrew Chamberlain who departed this life the 4th day of February 1793..." to his brother Jeremiah Chamberlain his part of the land on Ritchland to divide equally in six parts betwixt Jeremiah, John, Mary, Margaret, Elisabeth and Jenet; to his father Nenian Chamberlain his horse; to Anny and Jenet Chamberlain daughters of John Chamberlain a cow and calph; Nenian Chamberlain son of John Chamberlain a yearling colt; to each Jeremiah Chamberlain's daughters Mary and Jenet a cow and calph... (etc.)
I have transcribed these two versions above exactly/verbatim, complete with punctuation marks as shown, but leaving out the last part of the Will, which is not pertinant to this discussion. Now, you can see the meaning of the two versions of Andrew's Will are completely different!Which is correct, I have no way of knowing. The first appears to be a condensed transcription from the original Will itself done by Jesseye Dickerman herself, whereas the second appears to be taken from a secondary source in NSDAR Library.Someone will need to check the original, I suppose, if it still exists.
