A very nice, well-researched genealogy has been created by Philip J. Chamberlain of the World Chamberlain Genealogical Society, for this family, which is very prominent in the history of Virginia, complete with notes/sources for each generation on back.Churchill Gibson(8) Chamberlayne, b. 23 Dec 1876, Richmond, VA, d. 2 Apr 1939, Henrico Co., VA, m. Elizabeth Breckinridge Bolling 22 Jun 1911, with 2 children listed: Edward Pye & John Hampden.Churchill's parents were John Hampden(7) & Mary Walker (Gibson) Chamberlayne, who had 5 children between c1874 and 1879.John's lineage: Dr. Lewis Webb(6), Edward Pye(5), Thomas(4), William(3), Edward Pye(2), Thomas(1) Chamberlayne, b. c1630 England.Primary source: Virginia Gleanings in England, by Lothrup Withington, Gen. Pub. Co., 1980.It is hypothesized that this Thomas was a son of Richard Chamberlayne and Bridget Pye, which Richard was a son of Jane and Richard Chamberlayne.
Here are Philip's and my "notes" for Churchill: Data from Who Was Who in America, Marquis publications: Chicago, 1966, and gives the death date as 3 April. However, the Virginia Hist. Mag., p. 165, has the note," As this number of the Magazine goes to press, we are distressed to report the passing of a gifted and valued member of the society and its Executive committee.Dr. Churchill Gibson Chamberlayne after a short illness passed away at his home in Henrico County, Va., on Monday, April 2, 1939."He was listed in the 1880 VA census, age 3, and in the 1920 census age 23, living in Albermarle, Charlottesville Dist.Churchill founded the Chamberlayne School for boys in Sept. 1911; the school was acquired by the Episcopal Church and incorporated into its system in 1920.
The IGI (Mormon listing online) lists his birth as 23 Dec 1876, King & Queen Co., VA, and traces his ancestry on back.
