Philip J. Chamberlain, who created the original/preliminary WCS lineage for the Maugersbury, England, Chamberlayne line a couple of years ago, was kind enough to send me a detailed update and analysis which shows, quite clearly, that there is no evidence that the Dorothy who m. Gov. Robert Daniell of S.C. was the same person as Dorothy, dau. of Edmund & Eleanor (Colles) Chamberlayne of Maugersbury, Gloucestershire, England, who was, in fact, married to Edward Ridley [source: Visitation of Gloucester, 1682, 1683, p. 38].Philip has been corresponding with Alice Monschke, who posted the first of these GenForum postings - she indicates that the Dorothy who married Gov. Daniell might not have been a Chamberlain at all, and is working with other Daniell descendants to determine, in fact, just who she was.
The original confusion, based on several assumptions it seems, stemmed from "A Carolina-Virginia Genealogy", by York Lowry Wilson, pub. by Aldershot, Gale & Polden Ltd., 1962.This source also contains an unfounded assumption that the Edward Pye Chamberlaine & Pye lines were connected with the Maugersbury Chamberlaynes, or that Gov. Daniell's wife was related to Marmaduke Chamberlaine, nephew of the sea trader Edward Chamberlaine. We are indebted to Philip Chamberlain for identifying these errors, and bringing them to the attention of others.
