Mary Jane Chambers or Chalmers is my GG GM, she married Adam Skeldon on 6/1/1866 at Abbey St Bathans in Scotland. I was always under the impression that her name was Mary Jane Chalmers beacuse the Chalmers name is passed down in my family, as a middle name, because of her. However, I recently recieved a copy of their marriage record and her name is Mary Jane Chambers on it (as well as her parents being named Benjamin Chambers and Catharine Gilroy Chambers).
I know it was common to change from the Chalmers name to the Chambers name upon entering the US but the other way around? And to pass the Chalmers name on? I was just hoping that someone would have a little more info on Mary Jane and her mysterious name change. Thanks!
