Hi Bev,
we are not talking about the same willaim Chaulk as mine went to Australia with his family in 1830 or so and died there many years later. He worked a s a lighthouse keeper and a captain of a mail boat that sailed around Tasmania . We dont know what he did before going to australia but feel that he must have had some maritime experience. Family stories descibe him as a sea captain, but we have not been able to verify this. He married Augusta Louisa Jane Baudinet in London, and after having 2 children, but before leaving for australia changed his name to Baudinet, sometimes hyphenated to Chaulk -Baudinet. The family story is that she was an heiress and that he had to change his name to inherit. However there is also no evidence of this although she does seem to have come from a more " upper class" family. They appear to have been quite poor in tasmania. Williams parents were definitely Henry chaulk and louisa lewis, who married in London, but I dont know where they came from before that, nor do I know Henrys occupation.
It is possible that there is some connection with your william
Prue.
