Rose,
Thanks so much for answering my question about the origins of the Chagnon name. I really appreciate it.
My next questions to you are:
Is Chagnon your maiden or married name? Also have you done alot of research on the Chagfnons?
Perhaps we can correspond as one of my direct ancestors was an Angelique Chagnon who married Francois Benoit dit Livernois Lavanway I.She was born abt. 1687 in prob. Contrecoeur ,Quebec,Canada. Her parents were Fracois Chagnon dit LaRose & Catherine Charron. Francois was born 08 Jul 1640 in St-Georges, La Haye-Descartes, Touraine (Indre et Loire), France, the son of Pierre Chagnon & Louise Aubry Fauvreau. Francois died in Vercheres,Quebec before03 Jun 1693. His wife Catherine was born in Montreal 23 Sep 1666 and died Vercheres,Qc on 05 Jun 1746.
All my French ancestry comes through my maternal great grandmother Maria Lavanway who's grandfather Francois Lavanway. He immigrated from Quebec to Vermont as did many French Canadians. (I'm a native Vermonter.) Originally the surname was Benoit dit Livernois (Livernois being a corruption of the place in France Paul Benot came from in 1620. Some descendants kept the Benoit name, others kept the Livernois name and still others took on the Anglo version of Lavanway nameonce they crossed the Quebec border into the U.S.
Some of my French anscestors surnames are; Fontaine,Gauthier,LeMessier/Messier,LeMoyne,Pillat/Pillard,Petit and Bouart.
After I finish up with my French ancestry I'm going to work on my husband's LaTour family who we believe also came to New York state from Canada.
