The Chagnon's are on my husband's side. In case you don't already have the following data, thought I'd post it. Francois b 8 Jul 1640 / d bef 3 Jun 1693 in Vercheres, Quebec m: 23 July 1679 in Contrecoeur (Vercheres), Quebec to Marie Catherine CHARRON dit Ducharme b: 23 Sep 1666 Montreal, Quebec / d 5 Jun 1746 Vercheres. Francois was the son of Pierre CHAGNON / Louise FAVREAU Aubry. Catherine was the daughter of Pierre Nicolas CHARRON dit Ducharme and Catherine PILLAT (or PILLARD). Francois and Catherine had at least six chilren. (My husband's line is through their son Louis CHAGNON II dit Larose huasband of Marie-Madeleine FOISY Lafreniere.) In my notes for Francois, I have: A record for Francois Chagnon b 1640, Notre Dame de la Haye-Descartes (indre-et-Loire), France indicates Francois was born 8 Jul 1640 in Notre-Dame-de-la-Haye, Rochecarbon, France. Another online source indicates he was baptised at St-Georges, Descartes, Indes et Loire, France. (The variances in place names in France may be due to the renaming (and redivision) of many of the old French departments by the French Government.) A Quebec record for Francois CHAGNON indicates he was an immigrant born 1640-07-08 in St-Georges-sur-Loire (aujourd'hui Commune de Rochecorbon) Archeveche de Tours, Touraine (ar. Tours, Indre-et-Loire), France and that he was the son of Pierre Chagnon and Louise Fauvreau. His first wife is recorded as Marie-Catherin Charon, daughter of Pierre Charon and Marie Catherine Pillat-Pillard. The first mention of Francois in New France was in 1665 as a soldier in the Regiment of Carignan-Saliere. There is a record entitled "Confirmation" dated 1666-05-00 that lists 17 names including a Francois CHOGNON. The month (le quantieme de la date de la list) was omitted but the list is situated between the confirmations of Notre-Dame-de Quebec on 5 Jan 1666 and that of Fort-de-Sorel 6 Feb 1666. A second note indicates confirmed the 16, 23 and 30 May 1666. The marriage contract was drawn up by the notary Pierre Menard and dated 23 Jul 1679. Named were Francois CHAIGNON, from St-Georges, Archeveche de Tours & Catherine CHARON from Contrecoeur, Quebec. Parents Pierre CHAGNON & Louise FAUVREAU and Pierre CHARON & Catherine PILLAT of Contrecoeur. Francois' place of origin is indicated as St-Georges, Archeveche de Tours. The Tanguay Collection pg 597 CHA indicates that Francois CHAGNON I who was born 1645 and died 1693 married Catherine CHARON, the daughter of Pierre CHARON I, in 1681. In the 1881 Census for Vercheres, Quebec, Francois was a "cardeur, habitant" As far as the dit name "La Rose" goes. I like the story about the rose-strewn path. There is an excellent article regarding the 'dit' names or 'noms de guerre' at: http://www.histori.ca/prodev/article.do;jsessionid=EC7BCCD5371CE0FD1B4C360F0E4BA6C0.tomcat1?id=15346 Notify Administrator about this message?
