Hi! I realize it's been a while since this thread was started but I figured better late than never.

My father gave me the family tree a few years ago when Institut Drouin was still in buisness. The tree was accompanied by the Dictionary of Frech Canadians and the timeline of every original French Canadian name from 1607 to 1755.

Our ancestor was François Chagnon dit Larose who arrived with a contingent of soldiers called Les Soldats de Carignan in 1667 to quel the Iroquois uprising. He decided to stay when the soldiers returned to France (his home town was Touraine). He was given a plot of land on the shores of the St-Lawrence river in a town called Varrenes, QC. There he married a 14 year old girl, had two cows and raised a large family.

Around 1725 (the books are with my sister on the west coast so this is from memory) some of the descendants dropped the Chagnon part of thier name and kept Larose and the rest dropped the Larose portion. So, all Chagnons are related to Larose and vice-versa.

My sister will be visiting on Labour-day weekend, I will ask her to bring the tree and books. If you would like copies, please send an e-mail jc.chagnon@sympatico.ca.
