COPIED POST #345 CHAFIN genology forum
Dear Cousins, Friends, and Other Interested Parties,
I am pleased to announce (you have NO idea how pleased!) that I have finally completed work on a revision of my paper, “The Life and Family of William Chafin [Jr.] (1811-1887)”; he was my gg-grandfather. I wrote an original version for a family reunion in 1998, with a supplement written in 2000 after I discovered substantial new information at the National Archives. The revised paper combines the two and adds a little new material. The revision is 28 pages, double-spaced, with nearly 60 footnotes, single-spaced. As I do not have a family website (yet), I will attach this paper to an email and send it to anyone who wants it (click on my name above for my email address); it’s a Word 2000 document in Bookman Old Style font.
This William Chafin was a son of William Chaffin (c.1777-bt.1860-1870) and Rachel “Zechie” Smith (no, not “Elizabeth”: that’s old news). He was born in 1811, probably in Jasper County, GA, and died in Fayette Co., AL in 1887; he was buried in the Stewart Family Cemetery there. He married Sarah N. Jones in Newton Co., GA in 1834, and the family lived in that county until about 1852, when they moved to Itawamba Co., MS. Between then and 1878, William Chafin and family lived in a number of NE Mississippi and NW Alabama counties before finally settling in Fayette Co., AL. William Chafin was a poor man, but he was literate and he deliberately adopted the one-“f”variant of the surname, “Chafin,” as did all of his sons. Some later descendants used, and continue to use, the two-“f” variant, “Chaffin.”
William and Sarah Chafin had the following children, three of whom died during the Civil War (two sons, John H. and William Marion Chafin, and son-in-law, William J. Baker, served in the First Alabama Cavalry, U.S.V.):
John H. Chafin (1834-1864), married Sarah J. Baker in 1856 in Cobb Co., GA.
Martha Rachel Chafin (1836-1863) married William J. Baker in 1854, probably in GA.
Mary Chafin (1838- ?); nothing known.
William Marion Chafin (1840-1863), died unmarried.
Nancy L. Chafin (1843 - ?); nothing known.
Joel Colley Chafin (1846-1924), married Amanda Louise Eason in 1875 in Fayette Co., AL.
Joseph Newton Chafin (1848-1934), married (1) Piety Ballard in 1871 in Blount Co., AL, and (2) Julia Dean Self about 1878, probably in Marion Co., AL. (I descend from the seventh child, James L Medie Chafin (1896-1958) of the second marriage.)
The paper details only by name and vital statistics, if known, children of the above. Suffice to say, prodigious quantities of descendants now exist, primarily in Alabama, Georgia, and Texas, but in many other locales as well. My principal goal was to focus on one family—that of my gg-grandfather, William Chafin. I was astounded by how much could be learned about one, poor, southern farmer. My secondary goal is to learn more about the descendants of William and Sarah Chafin. In no sense is this paper the “last word.”
If you would like a copy of this paper by email attachment, let me know. I’m also posting this to the other forums.
Scott Chafin
