Hi Heather,
It's likely you are a fellow descendent of Thomas Chaffee, the emigrant. My GrGrGrandmother was Polly Chaffee, born March 13, 1798 probably in New York State. She was the daughter of Alpha Chaffee, Sr. and Mary Abby and married my GrGrGrandfather William W. Bowman about 1817 in New York State and migrated to Michigan in the 1830's.
If you haven't already done so, I'd suggest you go to your local or State library and see if they either have or can get on loan THE CHAFFEE GENEALOGY by William H. Chaffee.
I have lots of data about my Chaffee line but it's unlikely to be of much help to you unless you can get farther back than your Grandfather. Census records may be of some help if you haven't tried that yet. Your State Library may, as in Michigan, have all of the Census records available.
