I took a look at the 1850 census Canton, Wayne Co.
It looks to me that Henry was born in MA and
Mahala was born in NY. In 1850 they used a symbol that looked like an "f" or a "p" for a double s. In the census
Mass. looks like Map. Hope this is not a setback for you.
