Chaffey (Chaffee,Chafey,chafe,Chaff etc).
A Chaffey surname historian has traced the family back to 1080. He has found 14 differnt spellings of the surname.

In my line Chaffey and Chaffee became interchangeable.
My gr. gr. grandfathr's marriage license was writtenas Carey and the birth of my Gr. grandfather is written as Chafey.
I have seen my own line spelled in censuses in Prince Edward Island as Shafey, Schaffe and Chafe. In a court even it was spell as Chiffy one place and Sheaffy in the same transcript of the court record.
More recently in 1912 in an obituary of an ancestor the deceased is spelled correctly as CHAFFEY, however a survivor of the deceased was spelled as CHAFFEE. Go figure.
Anyone trying to decypher that masochistic inventor of the 'soundex' systems must be delighted.
The soundex code for Chaffey by the way is 100.
Good hunting,
Helen Mc
