Maybe as along ago as 10 years, The Seattle Times, Seattle, Wa, published a series of articles on surnames by a syndicated columnist, Ven Pitoni. Chaffee was included, and there was either a picture or a description of a Chaffee coat of arms, that included a bird at the top (a peacock I think). Maybe you can check the paper's archives.
