Hi Johan,
When the news accounts say his family were among the earliest settlers in Thode Island they were referring first of all to Thomas Chafe the immigrant who moved from Hingham, Mass., to Hull (Nantasket), to Swansea area in Mass. and finally to the Barrington area in what became Rhode Island when Mass. and RI made a land swap. He was in the second wave of settlers there following a group which included Thomas Prince, Myles Standish, William Bradford Edward Winslow and others.
I haven't learned the family line through which Sen Chaffee was descended but venture a guess it was through Thomas's son Joseph.
Which line are you connected with?
Cousin Paul
