The Benjamin Chaffey who moved to Brockville Canada from Somerset and was married to
Francis Elswood had a brother, Samuel who was my ancestor. Samuel also moved to the Brockville
vicinity at that time. It was Samuel who started the locks and mill on the Rideau Canal that another of the
replies to your query referred.
But back to your Benjamin, he had the following children (in no particular order) Benjamin,
George, Susan, Frances, Emily, Elswood, Mary, Sarah, John, William, and Richard. George had the
following children, again in no particular order, George, Charles, William, Emma and Elswood.
George and one of his brothers, I believe it was Charles went out to California where they
irrigated and subdivided Ontario, California. They were joined in California by their brother William
And George, William, and possibly Charles then went to Australia where they tried the same sort of real
estate scheme but it wasn't a financial success. William stayed in Australia where he died in 1926 but
George (and Charles if he went) returned to California where they were involved in the irrigation of the
Imperial Valley and the first electric lighting for the city of Los Angeles.
Sorry if I seem a little vague on a couple of points but I am doing most of this from memory, I did
look up the genealogical information in my files but most of the rest of it is from memory. I did see a good
book on George at Chaffey High School some years ago but I really only took notes on our shared
ancestors. ("The life of George Chaffey" by J. A. Alexander, Macmillan & Co., Ltd. Melbourne 1928)

I hope that this is of some help to you.
