The Adna Romanza Chaffee you first refer to did not attend West Point but went into the Civil War as a plowboy private from Indiana. Along the line he was discharged so that he could be reappointed with a commission. As you say he was in the Spanish American War but he was also sent to China during the Boxer Rebellion. He retired as a Lieutenant General and Chief of Staff in the US. Army. There is quite a writeup on him in the Chaffee Genealogy. l
His son attended West Point and also made quite a name for himself but died while still quite young. I'm not sure that part is in the Genealogy.
