What interesting information you have. My family are Chaffees in Wisconsin, but are in Dunn Co. Raymond born 1874 son of Hiram Sawyer Chaffee. Raymond's first son, Orville, was my Grandfather. We believe they moved from Waushara Co, or perhaps Adams Co. There is a Chaffee Creek in one or both of those Counties, it may have something to do with the land grant in your family history. It would be interesting to find out. By the way I got an original copy of the Chaffee Genealogy by William H. Chaffee, published 1909. It was very costly, but is in excellent condition. My Mother, Orville's daughter, has it now, but if there is anything in there on your line, I'll try to let you know. Best regards, Chloe
