Chaffe connection to Cotten and Beall?

My gf was Charles Chaffe Cotten (b.1882 Summit,MS:d.1957 Jackson,MS);ggf was Thomas Lane Cotten (b.1848 Franklin Co.,MS:d.1919, Summit MS);gggf was Joseph Robertson Cotten (b.1818 Franklin Co.,MS:d.1885 Franklin Co.,MS).

Thomas Lane Cotten married Martha "Mattie" Beall. Martha was the dau. of Elisha Beall and Chlorinda Brown.

The name Chaffe appears only in my grandfather's middle name and in his son's middle name (the son was a junior). It does not seem to be a family name on either side of the Cotten or Beall family - which is the curious point. Why would someone name a son with an uncommon and unrelated middle name in 1882? Any help would be appreciated.
