In checking the index to Carteret County estate records, I found there are four files in the name of John Chadwick: 1805, 1825, 1827, undated. The last two were empty when Sandra McKee inventoried them. My experience has been that the dates don't have much meaning, but often there is a wealth of information to be found in the documents found in estates files. According to McKee (who published the index to Carteret County Estates Records), the David Chadwick 1801 file contains a information on Richard Chadwick, who died before 13 May 1796 and had siblings John, Jacob, Solomon, and Rebecca (wife of Freeman Ellis). Their mother was named Henrietta (She was the daughter of Mary Cavanagh, d. 1768) and, I suppose, their father was David (Note: David Chadwick who d. 1774 named his wife Henrietta and son Solomon in his will). A 1795 letter mentions that John Chadwick was captain of a large schooner out of Wilmington. A deposition by Bartholomew Chadwick names his mother Henritta (sic) and brothers Solomon, Jacob, and Richard, but not John.Whether any of these are connected to your John Chadwick remains to be seen. I will check the estate records the next time I visit the State Archives. While I'm only 10 minutes away from them, it will be at least a week and a half before I can over there. By the way, Oliver Chadwick's will of 1830 names his wife Thamer and "small children, namely Oliver, Thomas and Tamar."
